It's In Our Hands

July 22, 2017

“Plastic is now found in almost every marine habitat on Earth, and we’re producing more than we can sustainably manage.” That’s a sobering quote from the In Our Hands coalition of 19 U.S. aquariums taking action together to advance ocean and freshwater conservation. The partnership was founded with the primary goal of reducing ocean and freshwater plastic pollution. You can follow the lead of their own commitment to eliminate single-use plastic straws, bags, and beverage bottles.

We’re proud to see that our local aquarium, the New England Aquarium, has signed on. Has yours? And you can support their efforts! We’ve got the gear you need to make three changes in daily habits:

Bring a bag.

Our pick: Chico Bag Originals. In a variety of bright colors, these 25-lb. carrying capacity bags fold up into themselves and have a carabiner clip so you’ll always keep a reusable bag on hand, never a needing a disposable one again.

Take a reusable bottle with you.

Our pick: Liberty Bottleworks, the only made-in-the-USA bottle from a zero-waste manufacturing facility using recycled aluminum. Each bottle is lined inside with a BPA-free food-safe coating so your water doesn’t come in contact with the metal, which means it tastes great. Add a sports cap for drinking on-the-go!

Sip from a better straw.

Our pick: Bambu’s Reusable Bamboo Straws. Lightweight and made for thousands of uses, it comes with a small pipe cleaner for easy cleanup. And when it’s outlived its usefulness, it composts!
