From Refugee to Entrepreneur

November 22, 2016

This time of year is a time of giving thanks. We gather together and remember those in need, inviting them into our circle of community as a guest at our table. With that in mind, this week, we want to share stories of impact and reflect on some of the remarkable experiences from our partners in the field and artisans around the globe, whose work you support and lives you impact every time you make a purchase. As our goods go from their hands to yours, we say a heartfelt thanks.

Particularly now, the plight of the world’s refugees needs our immediate attention. By investing in women entrepreneurs, Prosperity Candle provides the first employment opportunity after relocation for many women refugees and helps them establish new, sustainable lives. Six years ago, Moo Kho lived in a refugee camp with her husband and daughter. Unable to further her education or pursue work, her future was limited. And having lost everything, it was difficult to see how life could improve. Then she had the opportunity to relocate to the United States and start anew. A year later Moo Kho joined Prosperity Candle as an apprentice candlemaker. Today she is Prosperity Candle’s production manager — she has her own stake in the company and trains other women in the art of candle making.

Please check back on our blog each day through Thanksgiving to read more inspiring accounts from people whose lives you've touched.
