Beyond Fair Wages

October 27, 2017

For a company like Matr Boomie to achieve over a decade working in fair trade, you have to know something about root causes of income inequality and how to overcome them. And the answer lies far beyond simply providing fair wages.

In creating a respectful relationships focused on creating sustainable business solutions, Matr Boomie successfully connects more marginalized artisans to trade. In a recent post on their All One Kin blog, Manish notes many of the hardships artisan groups must overcome to ensure sustainability, including:One of the company’s founders, Manish Gupta, comments: “Fair Trade mandates instead that members explore the root of the market issue while empowering the artisan to improve their supply chain; the relationship is a much deeper level of partnership going beyond just buying and selling.” Production support has been a hallmark of Matr Boomie’s efforts in India.

The challenges that marginalized producers face are many, including:

  • Lack of product readiness, little market viability, inadequate product design and poor quality
  • Logistical issues like lack access to raw materials and the inability to ship reliably
  • Technical problems like inferior quality tools, insufficient skills and training, and production process issues
  • Organizational challenges like inadequate market knowledge and lack of production infrastructure
