Matr Boomie partners with SETU in India to provide ongoing health checkups and skill development workshops for its partner artisan groups so that they can have access to better health care, education opportunities, and sustainable employment.
Free preventive health checkups for general illness and risk factors are included along with free distribution of medicines specially for common cold, fever, and sexually transmitted infections. Free eye checkups are conducted along with free distribution of eyeglasses for vision correction to people diagnosed with poor vision, along with advice and medication for eye care.
Beyond addressing physical health-care issues for workers, to achieve its long-term objective of sustainable artisan development, SETU has taken another step forward by providing educational opportunities for women artisans and their families. To this end, literacy classes with a dedicated tutor began in 2014 at Kaladera, Chomu, Jaipur.
As Andres Gonzales from Matr Boomie tells us about these community development projects: “It’s important for consumers to know that fair trade goes beyond just fair wages. Marginalized communities have needs that go beyond just access to markets.”
