Fair Trade Is Divine!

December 22, 2014

At the heart of Divine is the amazing story of how the Kuapa Kokoo Farmers cooperative in Ghana voted to launch its farmer-owned fair-trade chocolate company. All the cocoa for Divine is hand harvested, shade grown, and slowly fermented to deliver a rich chocolate taste that makes farmers proud and delights chocolate lovers like you! By choosing Divine, you guarantee additional income and opportunities for cocoa-farming families.

Meet Jennifer Oforiwaa Kusi
She is 14 years old and lives in Bayerebon 3 village. Her father is a cocoa farmer and a member of the Kuapa Kokoo Farmers cooperative, and her mother owns a shop selling basic foodstuffs like rice. When she was younger, Jennifer had to leave her family and go to school in Kumasi, two hours away from her village. Now there is a new school built in Bayerebon 3 that was funded with fair-trade premiums; Jennifer was able to come back home and go to school a short walk away from her house.

Jennifer knows a bit about the role fair trade plays in her community. "Fair trade supports Kuapa," she says. "Fair trade means my father gets a bonus. And I got to go to one of the kids' camps that Kuapa Kokoo organizes for children of cocoa farmers." As she attends school she has plans for the future. "I want to be a nurse," she says confidently. "Then I can come back here and help my community when they are ill."
